IN: Tell City police officer and suspect killed in gunfight at hospital

A Tell City, Indiana, police officer and a suspect in a domestic dispute were shot and killed Monday morning at Perry County Memorial Hospital.

A state police official said Tell City Police Department Sgt. Heather Glenn, 47, and Sean Hubert, 34, both died after a gunfight involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Investigators released additional information about the incident Monday morning. According to an Indiana State Police news release, the shooting followed an investigation into a “domestic dispute” between Hubert and an unnamed female victim.

The victim reportedly suffered injuries and was receiving treatment at Perry County Memorial Hospital early Monday morning when Glenn, who was investigating the incident, spoke with her and then took part in a search for Hubert.

After police left the hospital, the victim reportedly advised healthcare personnel that Hubert was on his way there.

Local police and sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:50 a.m. Monday and a struggle with Hubert ensued.

“Sergeant Glenn made contact and attempted to arrest Hubert,” the ISP release states. “Glenn attempted to deploy an electronic-controlled weapon but it was ineffective.”

The ISP said Hubert produced a firearm during the altercation and Glenn suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Officers with the Tell City and Cannelton Police departments returned fire and struck Hubert.

Both Glenn and Hubert were pronounced dead at the scene.

Just after 10:25 a.m. Monday, a Deaconess Health System spokesperson said Perry County Memorial Hospital’s emergency room remained open, but all other services were closed due to the overnight shooting.

“The hospital is also working closely with local law enforcement, and all questions regarding the incident should be directed to Indiana State Police,” a news release states.

Glenn worked for the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and the Tell City Police Department for nearly 20 years.

Tell City Police Chief Derrick Lawalin said Glenn’s death represented a “tremendous loss” for the agency.

“We’ve lost a dear colleague, a dear friend,” Lawalin said. “Sgt. Glenn, she’s a cornerstone of our department. We are truly heartbroken.”

Lawalin said the agency’s “thoughts and prayers” were with Hubert’s family as well.

The Evansville Police Department extended condolences to Glenn’s family and Tell City police Monday morning.

The ISP described the investigation as “ongoing” as of 11 a.m. Autopsies for Glenn and Hubert have been scheduled.
