FL: 3 Broward middle school students hospitalized after showing signs of overdose

It’s unclear what substance the students ingested, but it’s the second time in two weeks where students at the school have apparently ingested drugs on campus.

Three students at a middle school in Broward County were hospitalized Monday after they demonstrated signs of overdosing, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane said.

Kane confirmed that the students attend Lauderdale Lakes Middle School, located at 3911 NW 30th Ave.

He said the students were taken to Broward Health Medical Center and HCA Florida Northwest Hospital.

“This is something very wicked, that, if that happened to my kids I wouldn’t be happy about it,” parent Edwitch Raymond said.

It’s unclear what substance the students ingested, but it’s the second time in two weeks where students at the school have apparently ingested drugs on campus.

Kristy Bradley’s son, Derrick Gage, was given what he thought was a normal piece of candy by another student back on Nov. 27, but it was a THC edible.

“It was pink, it wasn’t exactly hard. It felt like a Sour Patch (Kid), but it wasn’t,” Gage told Local 10 News.

“He was high. He couldn’t stake woke, like the whole day he slept,” Bradley said.

Lauderdale Lakes Middle School parent Queen Brown, who said Monday’s news was “concerning,” said she made her daughter watch last month’s Local 10 News report featuring Gage.

“I send her with snacks now every day and I told her not to accept anything from anyone because there’s no way for her to know,” Brown said.

A spokesperson for Broward County Public Schools said the district is working with law enforcement to investigate and the district is reminding parents to speak with their children about not eating unpackaged or unfamiliar items.

No other details were immediately released.
