Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita today announced his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) has been named the MFCU Unit of the Year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. Deputy Inspector General Ann Maxwell traveled to the Indiana Statehouse to recognize the team in person.
“This well-deserved honor recognizes the exceptional skill, tireless dedication, and unwavering commitment of every investigator, attorney, and staff member on our outstanding MFCU team,” said Attorney General Todd Rokita. “Day in and day out, they fight to uphold the law, hold fraudsters and abusers accountable, and ensure that every Medicaid dollar goes to Hoosiers who truly need care.”
Maxwell, who leads the Office of Evaluation and Inspections and oversees the State Medicaid Fraud Control Units, praised MFCU’s exceptional work.
“The Indiana MFCU is not just doing vital work; you are achieving extraordinarily high-impact results that are making a real difference,” Deputy Inspector General Ann Maxwell said. “Your work is making sure that taxpayer dollars are protected, that fraud schemes are stopped, that the vulnerable are safer, and that the Medicaid program becomes stronger, more resilient, and more worthy of the trust that we place in it.”
Since January 2017, MFCU has recovered $109 million in Medicaid welfare provider fraud. In addition to fraud, MFCU also investigates drug diversion and the abuse and neglect of patients at Medicaid-supported facilities.
Attorney General Rokita thanked Director and Chief Counsel of MFCU Matthew Whitmire for his strong and effective leadership.
“This recognition belongs to every member of our team whose daily commitment to fighting fraud, abuse and neglect has held wrongdoers accountable,” Whitmire said. “We remain focused on protecting vulnerable Hoosiers and ensuring Medicaid resources reach those who need them most.”
In the past 12 months alone, the unit secured more than 50 indictments or charges and more than 40 convictions. It referred 60 individuals for exclusion from the Medicaid program. The licensing team resolved more than 50 administrative complaints, resulting in 12 license revocations and 10 suspensions.
