Cannabis

« Back to Glossary Index

The generic term for all parts and derivatives of the plant, Cannabis sativa L. Historically this included varieties Sativa, Indica, and ruderalis. Now, most all varieties of cannabis are hybrids, needing a composition analysis to determine cannabinoid content. Legally, cannabis is subdivided into two terms: hemp & marijuana. With limited exceptions, Cannabis (and its cannabinoid components) is a controlled substance classified as a Schedule I substance in the US; this classification denotes a drug with a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use.
