US: Meta Under Investigation for Facilitating Illegal Drug Sales

Federal investigators are examining whether products produced by Meta Platforms—the company that owns Facebook and Instagram—facilitate illegal drug sales in the United States.

But the officials face some daunting challenges, not the least of which is the FDA’s severely hobbled efforts in its ability to block such products from entering the U.S. market due to limited resources and regulatory roadblocks, according to a pharmacist who has done research on the safety risks posed by illegal drugs.

According to a March 16 report in the Wall Street Journal, in 2023, federal prosecutors sent subpoenas to Meta representatives to learn whether ads for illicit drugs have appeared on the company’s platforms. Illicit drugs could be drugs without active ingredients, or lab-made synthetic compounds meant to mimic the effects of cocaine, marijuana or other controlled substances.
