New Drug Trend – Xylazine
A study from last week’s MMWR examined xylazine-related deaths in Cook County, Illinois, between 2017 and 2021. A total of 236 xylazine-related deaths were reported. Xylazine-related deaths increased throughout the study period; incidence peaked during July 2021. The percentage of fentanyl-associated deaths involving xylazine rose to a peak of 11.4% of fentanyl-related deaths assessed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office in October 2021.
