Beta-hydroxyfentanyl is a DEA Schedule I controlled substance. Substances in the DEA Schedule I have no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse.
Beta-hydroxyfentanyl was sold briefly on the black market in the early 1980s, before the introduction of the Federal Analog Act which for the first time attempted to control entire families of drugs based on their structural similarity rather than scheduling each drug individually as they appeared.
Beta-hydroxyfentanyl has similar effects to fentanyl.
In the DEA Tox Report (2021-Q4), 18 samples were identified, the samples were submitted from the states of Kentucky (2), Ohio (13), and Tennessee (3).
